Backflushing pool filter?
Answers:
On average, you'll be backwashing once a week. This can change, however, due to the amount of small debris in the pool and how often you vac the pool.
Owners typically perform all maintenance once a week, so you'll be vaccing at least then. Backwash every time after you vac and keep an eye on the tank pressure guage during the week. When it is 5-8 psi over your normal, clean, filter pressure, it's time for a backwash also.
Your amount of time backwashing, will depend on how dirty the filter is. Lay out your backwash hose.Turn the pump off, clean the basket, set the mutiport valve on the filter to "backwash", turn on the pump. The backwash water will run clear, then dirty, then clear again. You're done. Turn off the pump and if the filter has a "rinse" setting, turn it there, turn on the pump for 10 seconds, turn off and set the multiport to the "filter setting. Some filters have a "rinse" setting, some don't. Turn the pump back on, you're done. Don't forget you are removing water from the pool to backwash, so it's a good idea to have it filling before you backwash the filter, so you're left with the pool at your normal level.

until the water runs clear, and at least once every two weeks depending how much dirt bugs and leaves go into the strainer and pump or when your pressure goes past 12 depending on your start up pressure
If you are doing it once a week you got a good thing going.
...Everything depends on # of people, usage, temperature, rainfall, leaves?.
...When the water looks cloudy ...time to filter.
...Turning green is chlorine time.
i would go every other day and if u have green water and chlorine doesent work go to ur pool supply store ( not a small one they sell u stuff to get money ) and have them come and test ur water

Backwashing/flushing on a sand filter needs to be done when filter pressure gets high. I run an average of 10 pounds pressure on my filter. I backwash when pressure hits 12 to 14 pounds. I don't let the filter run until I see clean water though, I stop when the water is just a little cloudy leaving a small amount of particulate matter in the filter, this actually helps by picking up more of the small stufff that is left in the pool water. I then set my multiport valve to rinse for about 10 seconds to settle the sand back to the bottom of the filter. Then i go back to the filter selection.
when you do this make sure you backwash then you filter then go back to run.
I have 3 sand filters on my pool. my pressue stays about 8lbs. I back wash until i get to 10lbs which is about 30 seconds.
I do this for all of my filters in sequence.
Then you want to filter and when you clean the filter if it is real dirty filter it about 2 more times make sure you clean the filter before every filter.
since you are new @ this also go to a pool supply house NOT HOME DEPOT and get some ideas from them on how to maintain the pool for algea, shock,PH,chlorinator, and the list goes on and on.
