Fan turns on 5 minutes before compressor on central air conditioner?

On my central air conditioner, the inside fan will come on normal, but then my outside compressor wont come on until 5 minutes later. Is this normal or should i have it checked? The house seems to be cooling just fine. just the 5 minute delay on the compressor. any suggestions?

might be normal ... that way the air in the vebnts starts moving before the cold air builds. I dont notice the cold part , but with the heat the motor keeps running for 5 min after the heatre is off to empty the warm air in the vents

Some new t-stats have a compressor lockout circuit built in them, which will delay the compressor for 5 mins. Some newer furnaces have the same delay built into the circuit board. They do this so the compressor wont short cycle. This gives the compressor time to equalize the pressures in the unit before it starts again. I wouldn't worry about if the house is cooling fine!!
yea if the t'stat is a new digital one, it has a built in timer. that prevents the compressor from being short cycled and risking damage to it. like a kid turning on and off,on and off. if the stat is an old one, then the time delay is out in the condenser itself. dont worry its fine.
