Why does my shower keep getting colder after I have set it to a good temperature. Is there anything I can do?

I get the temperature just right on my shower and then is gets gradually colder. I reset it and it again gets colder. After about four resets, the temperature remains constant. I assume that it has to do with expansion caused by the heat but this didn't used to happen.

It sounds like your hot water heater needs some maintenance. Depending on it's age, it might have a lot of calcium buildup in it. You should probably have a plumber look at it.

might wanna try checking your hot water tank or something..

You are running out of hot water. Take shorter showers.
How big isyour tank? Maybe your hot water heater is working over time. You might need a new one.
Take shorter showers
most hot water tanks have a pipe that runs from the top to the bottom...cold water comes in the top (from a separate pipe)and then gets heated...the hot water is drawm from the bottom of the pipe (where the hot water is) Sometimes these pipes break or corrode away, which means that you are drawing water from the top (where the cold water is). You may need to have another pipe installed in your water heater.
A good reason is once the body gets use to it the water will feel warmer, but then again check the temp on the water tank.
Maybe your hot water heater isn't working right.
How many gallons does your hot water heater hold? Start there first.
Sometimes U can up the tempature that Ur hotwater heater dishes out, but it sounds like U need a bigger 1
consult an electrician...i think!
It is your tank, try opening the shower and let it run for about 2 mins and turn it off, wait for 15mins. and then turn it back on and it wont get cold that fast. Get a new tank and yes...dont stay in for ever...:)
It all depends on several things. If you are in an appartment block , and you live for example on the 12 floor. There is normally loss of pressure wich can also affect the temp.
You can get a device installed that equalizes the hot and cold water (keeps the hot and cold from changing, thereby keeping the water temp the same).
you dont need to fix the shower just set your body temp to a higher level say 40° centigrade
If its an electric water heater, the heating element(s) might have gone bad.
Two things are happening here:
1. Your body is adjusting to the temperature of the water. Therefore, instead of the water being colder, your body has adjusted to the temperature and you no longer feel it as hot.
2. You may be running out of hot water. Your hot water heater has a specific number of gallons in reserve. If you are using it faster than it can heat it up, you will be getting less hot water than it can dish out.

Solution: Take shorter showers, or buy a bigger hot water heater.
Yes, you may have Mineral deposits built up in the bottom of your HW heater, needs flushing out. Contact a plumber or some one who surely has plumbing knowledge to service it. Another thing you can try yourself is to " up " the heat setting. It may be have been previously set on low..
Dial is on front of tank. Low-Med.-High.
if you have oil hot water the problem is you are using up all the hot water faster than the boiler can heat it . for me this happens mostly in the winter. you see there is only a 5 gal supply of hot water sitting in a cooper coil that goes through your boiler. when you turn on the shower the hot water first has to fill all the pipes from the boiler to the shower head... if it is a long distance you've already used up much of the hot water. i found that if i let the hot water run till it just starts to cool then turn it off [ soap up] waite a while [ 2 mins] the boiler will kick on and then if i run the water a little slow i get to take a long hot shower. sometimes this varies depending when i first turn the water on: has the water in the coil been sitting there long [ cooling ] or am i tapping into a fresh hot cycle. it also depends on if the house heat is simaltaniously running then the shower water takes a long time to heat..
very small water heaters have 1,all others have 2-heating coils.if the water is hot for a lil while, then the top one needs replacing.if not at all,the bottom one.if left unreplaced both will go out.
This is related to your Hot Water Tank. Most Hot Water Tanks have a pipe coming in for cold water and a pipe going out for hot. As the cold water sits in the tank a gas or electric powered heating device brings the water up to the set temperature. As you use the hot water, cold water is added back in replacing what has been used. So the temperature in the tank gradually drops as you use more and more hot water until there is a long enough period of time where no hot water is being used and all the water in the tank is brought back up to the set temperature.

While your showering you have a mix of hot water coming from the tank and cold water from your street line. The proportion you start out with changes based on the amount of hot water in the tank. As the total temperature in the tank diminishes you will need to reduce the amount of cold water you use in your shower to compensate.

The solution to your problem is to either get a larger hot water tank or to make sure you get in the shower first if you are living with other hot water consuming individuals.
You say you can get it to go hot again by moving the shower handle. If this is right, it has nothing to do with your water heater. Replace the shower cartridge.
