Had a bad experience with an A/C contractor. What could I have done differently?
I chose to go with the contractor referred by Home Depot's 1800 number service. The owner (2nd generation owner) came and gave reasonable answers to my questions and gave me a reasonable estimate. He missed the first appointment but was on time for our second appointment.
When the workers came, they took everything apart and said they didn't have the right coil, and the owner was wrong in saying they could keep the furnace. The chief technician (who was leftover from the father's regime) said the old furnace was really too large and too old. So they charged me an extra $1250 to install a new furnace too. Do I have a reason to be angry?
Answers:
IF IT WAS ME I WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE FURNACE FROM THE BEGINNING.BUT,YOU SHOULD HAVE THE OPTION .BASED ON WHAT THE EXPERTS TOLD YOU .I WOULD HAVE TOLD THEM TO PUT EVERY THING BACK THE WAY IT WAS .AND NOW WE WILL RENEGOTIATE.THEY PUT YOU IN A POSITION OF NEED AND NOT WANT.I WOULD CALL HOME DEPOT .AND IF THAT DONT WORK THEN CALL BETTER BUSINESS

Older a/c and heat units can be a real PITA to get parts for. And by the time you go looking for parts for anything over 7 to 10 years old you get get into "universal" replacements. And anything 15+ is gonna be almost impossible to get. Next time get estimates in writing up front for a new unit.
