How to fix crumbling brick under front entry?

We just bought a house and when I peeled away the caulk I found a large hole with crumbling cinder block. I know I have to remove the slab of sidewalk in front of it to get at it and lay a new one so the water flows away from the hole, but how do I fill in the hole?
