A/C unit fan motor capacitor?

My A/C unit stopped cooling and would not turn back on, Theromstat said it was in Heat mode. I switched the breaker off the back on...no luck. Tech came to work on unit and said the capacitor was bad.......would turning off/on the breaker cause a power enough power surge to fry the capacitor.??

Answers:
The capacitor is most likely the reason the unit shut off in the first place. A capacitor will not be affected by just flipping a circuit breaker off and on as they charge and discharge to try to keep the voltage the same. It would take a high voltage spike to affect a capacitor.

The run capacitor for the fan went bad causing the condenser fan to run very slowly and was not cooling the condenser as it is intended to do. This excessive heat caused the unit to shut down.

of course. just go buy a new one. they are not that expensive and they are real easy to replace. maybe 30 bucks at the most.

Capacitor's often dry out on their own and stop working. I think it's more likely that the capacitor was old or had a small leak.
Simply put, almost anything can seem like it caused a capacitor failure and the capacitor can fail at any time without warning.

The capacitor in your system is one of the hardest working, most stressed items. It is a small thing that can cause big problems.

The bottom line, it is cheap to replace.
Service call $70
Capacitor $30.
Nice cool home $ priceless.
