I was wondering in a minute since a direct hit to a power line by lightning close by can overpower a surge protector may be totalling a spark gap (keeping the live and indeterminate wires really close to the ground wire) would make a strong surge dive the gap and be in motion to the ground insted of taking the long path through the independent of a device. I'm thinking of making my own as I can't find anything like that within my country. I'll make sure to insulate the box. Also would a plastic box be ok? because lightning doesn't requirement to jump around as at hand is a good grounding close the live and neutral wires. I'm thinking of installing it until that time the surge protector or should I install it after the protector?
I'm also wondering if the house wires will melt contained by such a surge (we do have breakers).
Answers: spark split style surge arrestors are common here surrounded by the states on the utility side of the transformer. On the customer side there are more restructured means for surge arresting. MOVs or metal oxide varistors are competent to supress all but the most horriffic strikes. I would recomend against the spark crevice as the size of the gap and the insulators must be cautiously engineered and a plastic box is not well suited for this. the wires for your home will not soften as a lightning strike occurs within such a short time.
