How can I fix uneven indoor stairs?

In my new home there are some stairs on the interior staircase that are carpeted and as you walk on them, some feel slanted forward and then some may even be shorter than the previous stair!? How would I go about leveling them out? I will be ripping out the carpet soon, so I guess that will help to actually see if the problem is visually obvious. I'm having new carpet installed over them next week and would prefer to fix this if it can be done fast and inexpensively. Thanks in advance!

Answers:
you may have a bigger problem with the way the foundation is settling. A quick fix can be achieved by shimming the front, back of the threads before you carpet

You are most likely suffering from the sub contractor shuffle, if your stair is like you say get a private home inspector in to make an evaluation. take these findings to your builder and demand a fix by most state building codes a stair must be level and the riser height with in a set height +or- about 3/8" there's no way to adjust a stair so your looking at a tear out and re inst any competent carpenter can do it in a longish day.

You can buy new treads for under Carpet at Lowes or HD- take the dam carpet off and see whats there- if this is a new home, make the Builder fix the problem, if not- it can be done Maybe ? shim and recut - if not you will need a new Stringer.
