Answers: I would suggest you contact someone locally that does repairs to lawn mowers, etc. They almost other have trans, extra pistons, and other parts that they hold salvaged from other job. If the mower is around 4 hp, 850 not's too bad a price. It's still a long instrument below the price for a new mover.
I suggest a local repair shop due to shipping costs, etc. You could also try the Sears craftsman network site to see if that's any help.

My advice is to compare the costs of the repairs to the costs of only just buying a new mower. You may be better stale just getting a current mower instead of fixing the old one.
As your friend found out, Sears doesnt want to own anything to do with elder stuff, specially not the outlet stores. All they wanna do is sell investigational stuff and be done with it.
Well , theres a few option he can take, if he wishes to be paitent, he can scan the classifieds and go to www.craigslist.org and turn out your area for a wearing clothes parts tractor. Usually a non runner ( in my suitcase ) ive seen for around $50 or so - depends on the trader. Since its a bigger tractor, someone might want more.

since pretty much peerless have been the majority of transmissions contained by tractors.
Id have to enunciate its probably in the ballpark - they arent cheep by any method , specially new youre looking at at lowest $400 and up.
I should also add, i get lucky one time- a local guy who tinkered on tractors was selling rotten his vast parts collection, i get a whole pickup truck full of extra deck, transmissions, a brand new 13HP briggs motor , wheel and other parts for ...... $150. It was a screeming buy and sell , specially since i received a Murray tractor with a blown motor contained by trade for another i was selling, it be practically getting a tractor for free.

According to "parts at sears.com" that transaxle is available for $875.00. Sears constituent number, 184956. Go to parts at sears.com, type within the tractor model number and it will list adjectives the parts and give an exploded picture of the item. You can by individual parts to repair the transaxle.
to most of us that does sound expensive, but everything near craftsman is.
have your friend check next to some of the local small engine guy's their everywhere, most likely one of them will hold a rider that has a unpromising motor and will even do the exchange for less than what he be quoted.
i have several of those guys around here, and the best method to find them is go looking, they are cheaper and most promising don't advertise due to overhread cost. apt luck
as renpen say's you can reshearch and order any and adjectives parts at sears.com perchance he just wishes a part rebuild. you can print the schematics also
