Sliding closet door, need to remove and saw bottom for new carpet. How does one remove it?

At the top, there is a track with rails on each side, and rollers attached to the top of the door. The door is wider than the opening, so removing the door involves removal of the wood facing. Don't want to do that. Nobody would sell a door that can't be adjusted to accomodate various flooring or easily removed and sawed off, but I see no way to do either. The only things I can reach are two white, plastic knobs that just barely peer over the top of the door at the site of the rollers. I took a screwdriver and pushed, pulled, etc. figuring it was a release that might let me move the door up and down. But no luck. All help appreciated.

Answers:
there are hundreds of door types and you discription needs more info. Take a few pics of the top and bottom and email them to sieberthomeimprove@yahoo.com he can tell you exactly what to do

Other answers:
some doors are designs to be lifted off thier track - some are designs the tilt off (tilt forward until the wheels are sideways and they slide out between the tracks - pull the bottom of the door away from the closet like a doggie door) - some people install them so they are permanant & you have to unscrew the tracks to get them off - goodluck!!

depending how much you want to cut off, you can try to cut it in place with a jigsaw, if you think it will work i would set up some sort of a guide so your cut is straight.(a board and a clamp) get a real good fine blade and maybe put tape of above the line so the door wont chip that bad. the were it goes into the wall hand saw or chisel then sand the edge with hand sander if you cant do that you probly half to pull the trim to get to it.
Okay, I'm not sure what kind of door you have, you say sliding closet door, which should just lift up and disengage from the track. But you also say the door is wider than the opening, which to me, sounds like a pocket door and is a lot trickier to remove. In either case, push in the release catch you mentioned and slide the roller one way or the other, this should disengage it from the door. If it's a pocket door, after you have the rollers disengaged, there may be a retractable metal or wood finger mounted at rear edge of door called a rear stop. This stop must be released for door to clear pocket.
