does anyone know how to tell if a gas dryer needs a sensor or a heating element? air is only lukewarm to cold?

Try the links below, I think one of them will help you. Hope it helps.
Other answers:
check & see if the glow (hot surface) ignitor is working.
Sequence of normal operation:
1. Set cycle & push start
2. Glow ignitor should glow within a few seconds
3 Heat sensor beside burner senses heat from ignitor, opens & diverts power to gas valve (you will hear a click & gas should come on & light.
4.Dryer heats & cycles burner using thermostats
most common part failures on gas dryers:
1. Ignitor
2. Gas coils on valve assembly
3. Thermal fuses (these don't reset)
If the ignitor does not come on, test for power to it. If there is no power, suspect a thermal fuse.
One other common failure is for the coils to get weak. You will notice the burner failing to ignite after it cycles a few times if this is the problem.

I agree; try repairclinic.com. Follow the links to get to your model or type. I had the same problem, and found a small plastic oval sensor that tripped from high drum temperature. Replacement cost was about 10 bucks and the time to disasseble, troubleshoot, get the part, and put it back together. Repairclinic is a godsend for help on all kinds of appliances.
