What's the best material to fill in a huge space under our concrete front porch?

I don't know what caused it, probably water, but we have this huge cavity under our front porch. The porch itself is in excellent condition and we don't have the money to tear it out and replace it.

I was thinking of filling the gap with concrete, but not sure if it's a good idea or not. Throwing gravel in there also crossed my mind, but I don't really know if gravel would work, because we have Black Rat Snakes and lizards that seem to be making it their home.

I have absolutle NO PROBLEM with the snakes and lizards they are harmless, and I don't want to hurt them. They eat pests like mice and bugs.

Any ideas what to use for backfill that would stand up to water erosion, keep out the critters (while not harming them either), and effectively fill the gap?

Thanks!

Did John Wayne Gacey live there before you?

But seriously, the smell is probably from the snakes and lizards. Talk to contractors, and subcontractors in your area that offer free estimates, that way you can get ideas on what would be best, (for free) and possibly do it yourself. And don't worry about the critters, they have a way of taking care of themselves. They will find another hole to climb into. I hope this helps.

It's kind of hard to say without seeing exactly what you are talking about. Sounds like gravel would be good and then maybe finish it with concrete? Maybe you should upload a picture to need to find mailslot cover 9"x3 3/4''?
