Can you reduce cross-talk (sounds traveling from other rooms)through HVAC ducts without reworking the system?

We have an old victorian twin, and the HVAC system was added post-construction. You can easily hear someone talking in the basement even if you are on the third floor, via the heating ducts. I have neither the knowledge nor the budget to replace the existing ductwork - is there an insert or baffle of some sort that can be inserted to reduce crosstalk transmission?

Thanks for your help!

Answers:
There is little that can be done about situations such as yours. Corrections would probably involve analysis and extensive duct modifications. Filtering or baffling affects air movement, the restriction of which might void your equipment warranties. Also interfering with air flow can alter the efficiency of the system. You need to have somebody look at it who has a reputation for successfully dealing with ductwork problems. Expect minimal guaranties and considerable fees. Good luck.

you will have to open the duct system to do anything. there are linings that may be installed inside the duct. try installing some at the elbows first since they are the easiest to open and they should help deaden the sound as it bounces around the corner. you may be able to install it on the first few feet of duct near the elbows also as well as other easy to access points.

I'm no expert, but perhaps you could trim roll filters to fit inside your heat registers, thus creating a baffle, while increasing the filtration of your system. They sell roll filter material at most heating and A/C supply stores. You will reduce the air flow thisway, though.I'm wondering if the greater problem might actually bethe cold air returns, though. These tend to be bigger, and would more easily transmit sound.
NO but cutting the duct between rooms and running them into a main mixing box will work. The duct board mixing box needs to be placed in the middle of all the room registers and attic should help tremendously. Measure the distance from each room register and try and find an area of the attic that is the same distance from the room registers and yet central to the air handler so you will maintain the same air volume for each room. You should be able to do this with flex duct, duct connectors, duct board and foil duct tape.
I don't know.
Huero is good, and is so right, there is little anyone can do for the conversations you are hearing. Me i would use it to my advantage or amusement! Huero stop using my closing! Good Luck
