buying a house on a slope higher than the road?
Answers:
the puddle in the basement could mean you have a cracked foundation, this could be a small issue or a large one depending on how bad it is cracked, to fix such a leak could cost as little as $200.00 up to $15000.00 depending if they have to dig out foundation and install weeping tile and proper drainage, get a pro to check your basement out first before you buy.
Flooding will not be an issue if proper drainage is already existing or can be installed.
A 60 year old house is not old at all, have a electrician check out wiring, a plumber to check plumbing and have a house inspector check out the rest of the house, the house will be settled so once the leak is repaired you will be OK.
You did not mention if you had a sump pump or what type of drain is in basement, the water on the floor could be as easy as a burnt out pump.
Like I suggested have it professionally checked out.
Good luck

Sorry but I wouldn't buy that house. If the house is that old you will probably end up with lots of problems besides the flooding. If you do ever get flooded, you will end up paying big bucks. Sounds like you should have the house checked out before buying it. You could start having problems with the plumbing seen the house is so old. Plus you should have the house all rewired for safe electriciy. It would make more sense for you to buy a newer home rather than having to spend out big bucks to bring an old one up to standard in which you will be happy with. But then if you have the money to put out I guess you will choose what you can afford.

I wouldn't think that this house is overly susceptible to flooding since it's built on a slope. The rain water has a natural path of drainage. A flood plain is usually a flat expanse lower than a nearby river. So, unless theres a river above you and the house is built on the slope of a basin, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
