agitator in6yr. old ge washer will not work unless i press down on it,everything else works.?

the washer fills but will not agitate , it empties and spins and rinces but does not agitate unless i press down on it.then the agitator works. is it possible for me to remove the agitator in order to check if it needs tightening?
