I have just planted Kentucky 31 tall fescue. I need to know when it's safe to walk on and mow?
Answers:
I planted the same grass seed this spring. You can walk on it when it is 2" high, but use caution. Walk carefully and don't walk on it after you have watered it heavily or you can tear it out by the roots.
I let my lawn grow to over 3" high and then cut it at 2 1/2" the first time. The next time, I cut it at 2" and will continue to do so.
Kentucky 31 is a tough grass and will stand up to a lot of abuse once it gets established.
Good luck with your lawn.

Fescue is a shade grass so it will do fine there. You can buy the species of Fescue for the application you need, whether its full or partial shade so make sure first you have the right seed for the right area. Seed usually germinates in 10 to thirty days depending on what type ( it will say on the bag) Obviously the less traffic the better over the course of it's initial growing period. I would look around 3 to 4 weeks. When you go to cut you never want to cut more than a third of the plant off at any time when you are mowing. So if the grass is 3 inches tall you want to cut off an inch, etc. Watering is also very important during initial growth
