why do I have to hold down the handle when flushing the toilet? Do I need a power flusher?
Answers:
I had this problem before if your chain is adjusted correctly it is more than likely your critical water level. When you flush the toilet the water fills up the bowl, but if the bowl isnt full enough then you need more water to get it to have enough presssure to push over that curve in the drain so you have to hold the handle down to let enough water in to have the pressure. Make sure that the hose filling your bowl is in the tube and that the ball is adjusted high enough usually you can just bend the rod to get the float ball higher

Because when you hold down the handle this thingy goes up and the water is released from the compartment that you rest your back on and it is used to recycle your droppings.

something in the toliet in the tank, that is not catching if you have to hold it down. you probably just need a part. go to wal mart or somewhere and tell them the problem. someone there can probably help
you need a new float valve, its the thing that opens, letting the water down. it should float untill the water goes down, yours could be filled with water so it won't float anymore. it is an easy job, and you can get the part at most hardware stores, it's universal.
No, replacing a good toilet is crazy, pull the back cover off and see if the chain is loose if so tighten it up (it comes off easy) if the float looks bad or feels solid replace the float any one carrys them. Wal-Mart is the cheapest.
tighten the chain on the handle.
Its the main mechanism that needs replacing, that the bit in the middle of the cistern.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
