how many pounds to a ton when talking about freon for a cooling system.?
Answers:
First, tonnage has nothing to do with the amount of freon in the system. Tonnage is a way of expressing the system capacity. Most central air units for homes are around 3 ton. That is the size of the unit, 36,000 BTU's(12,000 BTU's = 1 Ton of cooling). Most 3 ton condensers will hold about 4 pounds of freon(depending on length of freon lines and size of coils). So if you are a little low on freon, expect to buy around 2-3 pounds of freon. The price per pound differs with different HVAC firms. Call around and get the best price. This will get you close to what you'll pay. Hope this helps! Good luck!

if you look on the spec. plate on the side of the unit it will tell you exactly how many lbs. of freon you have on your unit..
if your going to add some yourself don't unless you know exactly what your doing and what kind of freon it uses and you know how to read the gages
for r-22 freon you should have a high pressure of 300 and low pressure of 150 . on a 10 ton unit you would use about 14 lbs of freon.

2000 pounds of ice melting.
Normally, there is a plate or label on the outside unit that states how much and what type of refrigerant is required. There is no set amount of lbs/ton because different brands have design variants so no two take exactly the same amount of refrigerant. When you call for service ask how much they charge for the freon needed for your unit. Good luck.
