what is the best method to install plywood sheathing for a roof?
Answers:
Install it in full sheets, staggering the joints on the rafters (best by half: 4'), then snap chalk lines and cut off excess with a circular saw. This is best for any kind of roof, gable or hip.
More in depth: Start in the center, bottom row, pull 47" up from the tails on each side, mark and snap a chalkline. Lay the first full 4x8 sheet (top aligned with chalkline), centering the break on the rafters. Pull and mark your 16" centers, nail the 16" centers true, then, use this sheet for marking the rest of your 16s the rest of the way. After its all laid and tacked, go back and nail it off.
edit: If you start getting into some steep pitches (10-12, 12-12) you'll probably want to trim the sheathing and nail it off as you go, as you have the top of your last sheet as a handhold. I usually get to the top, feed the pnuematic hose (for nail gun) through a roof vent, then when you're all done, use the hose as a break as you make your way down the roof to the ladder. Once on the ladder, unplug the gun and pull the hose down from inside (via roof vent).
And heres a real tip: If you are framing on a roof, you should have a heavy (at least 28 oz.) framing hammer. If you find yourself sliding down the roof, don't panic. Take your framing hammer and drive it claws first through the ½ plywood or OSB. It gives you an instant handhold until someone can get a ladder or nail down some ledgers for you to get down safely.
