What could be done to reduce excessive heat in your house during summer?
Answers:
Without knowing a little more about your houses construction its hard to give a intelligent answer but you could avoid using incandescent light bulbs, seems very small but they put out a lot more heat than fluorescent, avoid cooking during the day as much as possible. try to do any baking at night. There are already a lot of good ideas in here but this is my 2 cents.

Ceiling fan or air conditioner?
there are portable ACs that you can buy and put in every room. they actually do produce a sufficient amount of cold air and theyre not that expensive. my grandma has one of those in her bedroom and one in her living room. she has them plugged into her outlets and turns them on whenever she feels its getting a little too hot. its an awesome product and a good solution to your problem.
I think modern house are all the same maybe a small air con unit will be the only answer.
go swim or something! its much cooler then. and if u don't have a pool then go in ur basement. if you don't have a basement then... um... drink lots of fluids and open your fridge and/or freezer periodically. ice throughout the house would help too.
Swamp coolers, fans, dehumidifiers. Window fans set upstairs on the south side of the house/apt blowing OUT. First floor/basement windows on the north side open to draw in cooler air.
Open your windows, use floor fans and ceiling fans, really work, and are inexpensive to buy and run.
If you aren't getting a breeze through your window, even if the are across from one another, but a window fan, that will do well too. All are fairly cheap, and cheap to run too, as opposed to the air conditioners.
One other idea, what is the insulation in your attic like? Check that out, you may need to take care of that, if it's not sufficient, and it sure sounds like that.
If you're not living by the seaside and you're talking about dry heat, and you're looking for non-electronic-advise, first check where sunlight hits the walls. You could cover up the wall that receives the most sunlight with a stone layer (sold in Home mart and Home depot) or even with a climbing plant like Hedera helix (Goldheart or Jubilee) or o climbing rose. If you don't use heavy curtains sunlight will go in through windows as well.
A water fountain helps too, but you would need an electric pump to move it. Still, any water vessel in the window seal that recieves the most in going wind will help.
I have an attic fan and when its not seriously hot outside it works great! Attic fans require installation by someone who knows what they are doing but it can be such a benefit to be able to open the windows and have a constant breeze flowing through. These are also sometimes called whole house fans. Here is a good example of one.
