how can i tell when a water heater was manufactured?
Answers:
Use the link below and see if your unit matches up with any of the manufacturers on that site. (if it's not among that bunch, I searched using--water heater serial number )
or copy down the serial number and manufacturer and pass it along to any water heater dealer. With that info they can tell you manufacture date.
Other answers:
There should be a plate on it somewhere, usually the front, that states the manufacturer, model, manufacture date and possibly a serial number.

see above had the same link i did
date code is always hidden in the serial number sometimes on some models not listed on that site its even reversed
should give DZ the credit tho
A lot of times the first four numbers of the serial number will be the month and year it was made, something like 08A064527S would be August of 2006.
