Do any gas hot water tanks display water temperature, preferably digital?

I agree with you that this would be a much nicer feature than the meaningless plastic knob, but I have never seen one. Even if the temperature was relative to the position of the thermometer, it would still be more useful than "Hot, Warm, Vacation" etc.
PG&E makes a little card that sells for $1.74 that you can test your water temp with, but this is meant to be something you use to adjust the temp with once or twice to save energy. Here is the link I found on Froogle:

You could also adapt some small digital thermometers to give you these readings. Radio Shack sells some cheap digital thermometer for about $5:

There are none currently on the market, with that feature. One issue that prevents manufactures from putting this feature in the marketplace is that the temperature inside the tank varies from the top, to the middle, to the bottom. The final water temperature that you get out of the tap also varies depending on how far the water travels, and how long it has been sitting in the pipes.
