What do I do with an unwanted, possibly-broken washing machine?

Our washing machine started spraying water, and we thought it was broken. Our new one did the same thing until we put it back on its base, and this might be the simple fix for the old washing machine too. However, we don't want to make a mess again and just want to get rid of it.

I have tried donating this washing machine and posting in on Craigslist, but no luck so far. How can I get rid of it for maximum value / minimum cost? Hoping for a better answer than to take it to a junkyard...

Answers:
Take it to the municipal dump. No cost at all for residential waste.

Other answers:
Go to your local dump and see if they have a special location for those. I know they have a special section for refrigerators and computers. There may be a small fee involved, but it shoudn't be too much.

If it's broken, I wouldn't try to sell it unless you make sure you tell whomever is interested in it that they are buy it as-is and explain the problem up front. I would just get rid of it as I explained above.

If you can't fix it freecycle it!

Someone will use it for spares or have the time and knowledge to repair it!

www.freecycle.org and join your local group!
Take it to a repair shop and offer to sell it to them. or a second-hand dealer.
unfortunately, people leave them in the back lane and the council take them
u could try a charity that takes furniture etc, there is one in plymouth that takes washing machines and reconditions them, but the chances of u living in plymouth are probably quite low
Put it out front with a sign saying free on it.
It will be picked up in less than a day.
Doesn't sound like you will not get money for it if Craigslist couldn't sell it.
Hook it up and try it again say out on the porch. If it is a simple fix, you should fix and sell it for a little dough. If you don't want to do that, check the sunday paper, there are a lot of guys that pick up appliances and maybe even pay $25 for them for the parts or to repair and resale.
Remember all those socks that have gone missing well if you open the machine you will find scores of old socks in there that could be the problem
When you buy your new washing machine get them to take away your old one as part of the deal when you make your order - find a company that will remove it when they bring the new one to you.
Wrap it in paper and leave it outside of your door, with an envelope taped to it, and I PROMISE you someone will steal it!
leave it in chris mellors garden...
Local council tips take them free of charge. Just got to get it there.
I phoned the council, they came with a lorrycrane and took it away. I just had to leave it where it was accessible. Perhaps it was because I said that I was going to leave it on waste ground!
Try free-ads in your local paper; be honest about the fault, sell 'As seen' and don't ask too much - Oh, and buyer collects!
Ring your local council, and arrange for them to collect and dispose, it may have bits that can be recycled.
