Will putting in a GFCI outlet ground that outlet or do I have to have the whole thing re-wired?

Answers:
Maybe i'm reading the question wrong,or the others have missed the question.Putting a GFCI outlet in an ungrounded system will not ground the system, for that matter I believe it would not even work. So, the answer is no to the first part of the question and yes to the second part.Hope this is of help

Other answers:
No, put it in the closest outlet near the breaker box. All the rest of the outlets in the circuit will be protected.

Put it in - just read the instructions first
Norm hit it on the head,,,, the first in line has to be a GFI and the rest on that line will work off that one.
The GFCI outlet will protect the circuit which is what the ground is intended to do.Hope that helps.
A GFCI is used to protect yourself or anybody else using that outlet, what it is is basically a mini breaker box, if there is power flux in that outlet it will pop the breaker at the outlet. case in point, if you are using a toaster and you accidentally knock it into the sink full of water it will shut the circuit off, (any outlet near a water source including outside should be a GFCI) and no you do not have to rewire the whole thing, its just the matter of taking the old one out (turn off power to it first unless you want to light up like a Christmas tree) and put the new one in, after you restore power check it to make sure it works, push the test button then if you see the other button pop out or hear a click push the reset button, sometimes you do get a bad one that doesn't work. I hope this helps.
You can convert any modern receptacle that has three wires (black, white and bare) by installing a GFCI receptacle according to the instructions that some with it. You can also piggy back other receptacles.
Your good to go if the outlet was grounded to begin with.
GFCI only works if you have a grounded system so it won't do any good to install one.

No, aGFCI will not ground you circuit. In fact, if no ground wire is detected by your GFCI unit, it will not power up at all. You will have a dead plug. To give you proof of this, open the box containing the GFCI, remove it and look on the lower back of the unit. there is a green tinted screw there that says ground. A ground wire must be attached to this screw.

Any device that protects you or your electrical equipment from shock or surge has a ground. Why, because that is where the device sends the current to keep it away from you. If there is no ground wire to obsorb the shock for you, guess what... zzzzitttttt
