Depending on the age of the house, it can be a fuse box, or a circuit breaker panel. You really should know where this box is located, for any emergency.
Look down in the basement if you have one. sometimes they are in the hallway, or in a closet.
They are easy to spot, being usually metal, Grey in color, and have a snap in door, with a ring, that allows you to pull it open.
Check with your neighbor, as their house was probably built at the same time as yours, by the same builders.
When you do find the circuit breaker, it just needs to be turned off, and then back on. It should stay on. If it doesn't, you have a short in the wiring. Get help from a knowledgeable friend or electrician.
Other answers:
it sounds like a fuze / circuit breaker. Could just be the light itself. Switches do not go bad in general with out a lot of abuse.

Ask a relative or a friend who knows about electricity, or call an electrician. Your problem could be as simple as an overload burning out your fuse, or you might have a short circuit somewhere. Get somebody who knows...
try looking for fuse near the electric meter. good luck
it could be one of two things maybe more.since electricity is divided into two circuits that explains why you have light in part of the house.the breaker or fuse that controls that circuit should be checked first.you should have a panel where all these items are listed.now if that doesn't work you could have a main breaker or main fuse bad
these main fuses can be inside the house or sometimes outside.in technical terms you could have one leg of your service blown or tripped.hope this helps .
