why does my wind-up clock no longer dong?

Answers:
It could be that the thing that makes it "Dong" could be broken or if the thing is old then is it probably be done for.

Other answers:
it may need to be wound if it is not working at all (as this needs doing every so often) or mor likley the weights are off and need to be adjusted - having assumed it is a Grandfather type clock.....

BEst of luck

another possibility is that it is over-wound, too much winding ?
Probably over wound-- are there two places to wind? One is for the chime-- the other for the time. Usually the chime is the left winder place. Try to wind the left- if it won't wind (gently, gently!!) then find a safe place to put the clock-- take the pendelum off ( it lifts and then to the front (much like a hook and eye connection)-- without the pendelum if the the time spring is OK you'll hear a fast tick tock tick tock-- if you look you'll see the hook the pendelum goes on-- going back and forth quickly. That's OK. Now, lay the clock flat on it's back-- and leave it alone. Like maybe two weeks-- check the chime winder-- it might wind-- if so-- re-hang the clock, replace the pendelum and rewind the two places . If you have a small bubble level-- place it in the clock insides and make sure the level bubble is centered. If you have a level bubble-- check the outside of the clock case-- both sides. When the clock is level, start the pendelum gently, close the door of the clock and plan to wind when it's time........ most clocks tell you if they are 7-day or 31 day-- so I wind my 31day on the first of the month (adjusting natch).
