3 ton Central Air compressor overheats?

Answers:
Like the other guy said, could be many, many things.

My bet is if it worked good before and this year it started this and you have never had it serviced, then the condenser coil (outside unit) is dirty.

Turn the unit off and shut the power off. the condenser (out side part) is most likely dirty. You can clean it if you are handy. You have to take the top off (power all off) and spray the coil out with a garden hose pushing out all of the years of grass and dirt out (inside to outside). don't get any electrical parts wet or you will have to wait until they dry to turn power back on. could be other items but start here.

If you have the money call someone qualified.

Under charge, Over charge, Under voltage, Condensing coils dirty, Condenser fan not running properly or not right fan. Too much load, inside unit not matched with outside unit. That is all I can tell you with your information.
