It sounds like a broken belt. Look underneath & see.

Yes, It could just be the belt.
Update with brand and model some newer whirlpools and Kenmore's have a little connector that breaks between the motor and gear box experienced service tech can replace in about 10 min. part is about 5 dollars. Depending on your area my cost up to $100 dollars to repair. get estimate.
You can by replacing the bearings that are under the agitator, but that depends on how old it is, most of the times it's cheaper and less a hassle to just to get another, because, when you start tearing it apart, there are alot of small parts and gaskets that you will then need to replace.
If you can remove the agitator easily, turn it on and see it the shaft is moving. If it is then the belt is not broken, then the splines in the agitator is more than likely stripped.
If the shaft does not move the belt maybe broken or the gears in the transmission have failed.
$11.00 for a part called "motor coupling" very easy to install. first timer can do it in under 20 minutes. look under yer machine between the motor and transmission.
If the washer fills and drains if you leave it for the complete cycle. It could be as simple as the door switch. If you leave the door open on some models it won't spin or agitate. There's a switch that the door when closed. Shorts this switch. The switch maybe faulty.

Have fun
It may be a belt, but most washers are direct drive to the agitator shaft. Take anything off the top of the agitator so you can look at where it may be colted to the shaft. It may have 4 plastic pieces on the top, they are sometimes called dog ears. They momentarily lock themselves into a gear-toothed ring around the top of the shaft as it moves back and forth. They sometimes break, or just get worn. You can but replacements for about 5-6 bucks, and are not hard to replace. Or, if you go to a dealer who sells used parts, get a used agitator for 10-20 bucks, and replace the whole thing. I did that, saved a lot of time and agrivation that I could have had.
