Why does a compact fluorescent light bulb not work with a ceiling fan?

I have a ceiling fan with a light underneath it that takes a regular light bulb. But when I try to use a compact fluorescent bulb, it flickers. Can someone tell my why?

Answers:
I had this happen once with a fan that wobbled! Balanced the fan blades and the flickering quit.

Btw; Does this fan have a dimmer? CFL bulbs don't like dimmers.

I would try another bulb. I have used/am using CFL for all my fans-- on the other hand-- I have had an occasional bulb that is whacky-- worth a try I think.
good luck

TRy another builb. You have a bad starter in that one.
It might be a bad connection. Is your fan wobbly?
or the wiring is weak so when the fan takes so much power that there isnt enough left for the CFL bulb.

I have used them many times in ceiling fans with only one problem. the bulbs point downwards but the CFL bulbs are made to point upwards like in a normal light. I think this leads to overheating because the heat from the cfl ballast cannot escape.
