There is a fine powder you can buy called diatomaceous earth, it kills ants,spiders and even fleas! (cheapest place I have found it is at the farmers co-op.) It literally slices them up inside and causes them to dehydrate and die very quickly and its great to prevent future outbreaks. I would dust the area you are having problems with and leave it down for at least 4-6 hours before sweeping it up and vacuuming it up. You could line it around your house outside and put it in problem areas outdoors as well.
Powdered chalk works similarly- it will dehydrate them and they hate to cross it.

Drink beer! Pour some for the ants! Ants love beer too and they will crawl into the cups and drown in beer! Or just use ant poison
Mix some grape jelly with boric acid, the ants take it back to the nest the queen eats it she dies the nest is no more.

Purchase some 20 mule team borax laundry soap and put the dry soap in one of the cheap plastic ketchup squeeze bottles that you can get from any dollar store. Apply it along baseboards, cabinets around plumbing under cabinets, anywhere you see traces of the ants, you can also go around the outside of the house and on window sills, leave the detergent lay for a few days, the ants will take it back to their nest and it will kill them. When you no longer see any signs of ants vacuum up the excess laundry detergent in the house and use the rest of the soap to do laundry with.....I have used this for years and it works, this year has been bad for ants and I have had to treat some areas twice.
