Answers:
If you are sure you have the plumbing hooked up correctly, and it leaks out the backwash line then you have a defective "spider gasket" (if it is a multiport valve), OR a defective "o" ring (if it is a push/pull valve.) Multiport valves have a handle on top that is turned round from filter, to backwash. There are also other settings. Push/pull valves have a "tee" handle and only 2 positions-- up and down. Parts should be available from any pool store. If it is a multiport valve, take it apart first and remove the spider gasket- there are about a million different ones! Some are made onto the "rotor" and the whole rotor will need replaced. Similarly, push/pull valves use any number of "o" rings. Best to take them with you. Ask the pool store people about reinstalling the parts. Lubes and "stickums" are necessary.
Hope this helps.
