Is there a way to get a burn mark off of an end table while refinishing it?

You can do it without refinishing it. Use steel wool or very fine grit sandpaper to remove the blackened area. Then use either Howard's Restore A Finish or Fornbeys kit. I like Howard's because it is a one step process. Simply choose your wood tone, apply and wipe off excess. It will fill in the area with the color of your stain, it will make the piece shine and it won't damage the existing finish.
