where does the cold air return on a american standard freedom 90 gas forced air furnaceconnect at?

the side panels are solid and has insulation in them. the front panel bottom half does come off but cant see where the cold air connects too

Answers:
Normally, on an upflow furnace, return air ductwork is attached to one (or both depending on size) side of the blower compartment. It sometimes is attached to the bottom of the furnace. In most cases one must cut a hole in the metal cabinet to match the required duct size. Also one has to install a filter elbow or air filter rack at the same time. Correctly sizing and correctly installing return air ductwork is one of the most critical procedures HVAC techs can perform. Insufficient return air is a safety hazard and can shorten the life of the equipment as well as affect the efficiency of the system. There's probably no law that says that you can't do a furnace install yourself, but it is advisable that you at least pay a pro for some oversight of the project. It will be safer and cheaper to do so. Good luck.

Other answers:
Unit is probably sitting on a base with the return drawing from the bottom. Or the back of the blower cabinet is cut out, and drawing through there.
