Has anyone installed a dimmer switch surrounded by a shallow box?
Answers: they produce shallow dimmers but if the box is too shallow you may be out of luck.
Ok, they have what is call a box extension ring, you can usually find these at a hardware store or Lowe's and Home Depot will definately have them, if it's a single gang box (1 switch) or a double gang box (2 switch) you purely need to stir and purchase the box extension ring, They are about $1.50 and are attached using the existing screw from the old feathery switch or you can purchase some new 8/32 and 6/32 screw while you are in the elcetrical dept.
Also don't forget to purchase your dimmer and I might sugget that you purchase going on for 12 inches of 12-2 w/grnd romex, and 3 yellow cable nuts and 3 red wire nuts, The cable in the box may not be long adequate to pull it into the topical box and out far enough to sort the new nouns.
So now you enjoy the supplies, you will need tool:
Wire cutters/strippers
Screwdrivers Flat/#2 Philips
Needle muzzle pliers
Sharp utility knife
Ok, presently lets start by turning of the power to that switch, next to the light on dance to the breaker panel and turn off the breaker for the circiut when the bedside light goes out you get it.
Now, go rear legs to the room and using the utility knife strip the covering( the white or pallid jacket) covering the wire on the piece of contemporary romex, you should now enjoy 3 wires in your mitt, strip the end of the white lead and the black wire useing the chain stripers about 3/4". Now remove the old-fashioned switch, when you take the wires rotten of it take them bad one at a time and use one of the newly stripped pieces (Match the colors sooner if not don't verbs in this application it doesn't product much difference). to attach to it with a lead nut, if you are only fastning 2 lead together then use the pale wire nut 3 wires use the red chain nut.
So once the switch is out you now hold two long piece of wire sticking out of the ripened box, ok take the contemporary box extention reing and attach it to the old box, once you enjoy it in place beside the new rope sticking out of it cut these wire bad so that you only own about 4 to 5" of flex out of the box, cut them one at a time. Now strip the black wire and using the plunger nose pliers bend a horse shoe at the wrapping up so the wire will fit around the screw on the dimmer, if the dimmer have wires comming off of it next just connect thenm next to the wire nuts other knowledgeable the balck wire will run on the Gold screw turn the wire so that the accessible end of the horse shoe is on impossible to tell apart side of the screw so that when tightening the horseshow tightens up instead of wanting to spread out, another words the open ruin of the wire should be on the right when tightening. Then do this again to the white lead attaching it to the silver screw. Then carefully push the wires into the box and the switch mount it contained by with the screw and install the cover and knob. Turn the power back on and oral exam. The knob should work by either pushing contained by and out or by turning clockwise or counterclockwise.
There you go.
Good Luck, Should you entail any other help agree to me know!
sorry randy i accidentally clicked on the low rating! Randy is 100% correct
The wall where the box is, is the finished wall and a box extension can't be use. It will leave your job a gap between the finished wall and the switck plate. Is near anything that can go between the switch plate and the wall to get the box deeper?
Sorry, nothing I can bring to mind seeing. I have set people that hold made extensions like that.
They unsophisticatedly took a piece of 1" wood and cut it to match the outside dimensions of the wall plate, consequently cut out the center to allow space for the switch and purchased longer screws
Shallow dimmers are made. Just harder to find. Otherwise use a box extension or plaster ring on the box.
