Answers:    turn the gas valve stale. Need more info...Why?
Turn off electric fire gas vlv. then turn rotten small gas vlv off largest gas line that feed your water electric fire. Close cold water inlet to hose down heater get underway heater drain vlv. and clear a couple faucets (hot water side) to receive tank to drain, you don't want to evacuate that cold water contained by the tank adjectives winter for rust and sediment to build up.
