Check your breaker box to see if it tripped (turned itself off).
If it does it again, call an A/C service.
Make sure the power is on to the furnace. If it have batteries replace them. Some unit have a tiny reset button on them. For more info, check out the thermostat page at my source.
Depends on the problem. You might enjoy a loose wire or the section may have died. Anyone futzing beside the heat pump or doing any other work?
If not, I'd verbs the stat and try jumping the wires. If you can seize the heater to come on that path, replace the stat.
BTW, don't throw it in the trash. It probably have mercury in it. Your county website should enjoy disposal instructions.
As a HVAC Professional, I must state the following:
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING,
DO NOT JUMP WIRES ON THE THERMOSTAT
OR THE THERMOSTAT BOARD.
You could short something out, and cause more problems than you currently hold.
Besides replacing batteries, or turning the furnace bad and back on within is not much a DYIer can do.
Call a Heating Contractor, and save yourself some grief.
Good Luck
