how do you connect a four-wire bell cable to the door bell (two switches to one chime)?

i have a new home, came all wired, but the door bells were not connected. There are three lose wires in the basement, one of which should go to the transformer, which has only two terminals. The connecting wire has 4 separate coloured wires

Answers:
Verify your door switches are wired and return to your basement.
Using a voltmeter, set it measure resistance to a high value and have someone press the front door bell switch on and off.

Measure resistance across one pair of wires in the basement - you should find one pair which has it resistance go from high to low (open to short.) Label that wire 'front door bell switch.'

Repeat the resistance measurement on the second door bell switch. Label that wire '2nd door bell switch' or an appropriate name.

Now find the wires to the doorbell itself. I think the connecting wire with 4 separate colors (yeah, I'm in the US) actually goes to your bell. Your bell might have 2 distinct tones, one for the front, and the other for the 2nd door. If you remove the coverplate on your bell, you might see how the 4 colored wires are connected. Write it down.

Otherwise, take a pair of wires and briefly touch them to the 2 terminals on the transformer (XFMR) in the basement and see if you get a bell tone. If not, change one of the wires and touch the XFMR again until you find the right pair for each of the 2 bell tones. Label each wire pair properly - bell 1 and bell 2.

Now, connect one wire from each bell switch (front and #2) together and then to one XFMR terminal.

Take one wire from each pair of the 4-wire cable & tie together and connect to the the other XFMR terminal.

Take the remaining wire from front door bell switch and connect it to the remaining wire of the pair of bell 1. Test the front door bell switch 1 - it should ring bell #1.

Finally, connect the remaining wire from bell switch 2 and connec it to the remaining wire from the pair of bell 2. Test to confirm.

You are done.

I connected my 2 switch doorbell following the diagram on any electric D B package at the home center or use a book on electricity.Mine works great but don't remember the exact wire connections.
One of the wires in the basement is not used. (probably green) connect the other one to the other terminal on the transformer. touch the switch wires together, if the doorbell rings, connect those two to each side of the switch. Do the same for the other switch.
all you need is 2 wires, from the transformer, but you need to know the voltage your chimes are. Take the cover off and see the voltage then note the wires and mark them. Wire up the chime with the 2 wires, and wire the transformer with the same 2 wires(YOU may have to tarce the wires if not color coded) wire them to the proper voltage(usually 12 or 24 volt settings)
