What is the black stuff in my heating oil tank. How do i get rid of it? It clogs the filter in time.?

Answers:
Mold and such. Next time you're low on fuel, drain and flush the tank. Then order oil from a different distributor who uses a fuel stabilizer.

You have microbiological organsms living in the oil tank You can get rid of it by emptying it and cleaning it out with steam or very hot water. There are also chemicals you can treat it with but there expensive.
The heating oil in our part of the country is red so that you can not use it in your road vehicles, they have just added a dye. The black would be from moisture in the tank that has rusted, an oxidization of the metal of the tank.
the black stuff is microbiological organs ms these are minute bugs that eat the oil as they eat the oil and digest it they then fart this is the gas that fires the boiler
sludge will build up over time. clean the filter on a regular basis
