Leaking shed roof?

What is the best way to repair a leaking shed roof using roofing felt ?

Answers:
I would imagine that you are in UK with a garden shed. Most answers seem to be from USA and thats fine. Strip off old felt , gather up all your old paint cans scrape out contents in an old pail and "glue" on strips of plastic sheeting about a foot wide horizontally. starting at the eaves, and overlapping. using the "glue"
This gives you a "breathing" space. NOW at your leisure put on the roofing felt according to the instructions on the roll of "GARDEN SHED ROOFING FELT" Should last fo 20 years

Other answers:
If the existing felt is OK apart from the odd small hole or tear, you could try using a special roof "paint" (from a DIY store). It seals the leaks & is easier than replacing the felt

I suggest tearing off all old roofing and starting over using roofing felt. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Do the same with roll roofing or shingles if you have enough pitch.
Roofing felt is not designed to keep out water. It is designed to prevent friction between the roofing material and the sheathing. if used, the sun's rays, specifically UV, would cook it and in a short time your shed would be leaking again.
Depending on your current roofing material, (shingles, tar, corrugated metal, ETC), there are several options, and most are patchable with a fiber-based tar. Albeit, tarring is also a "temporary" patch. The best solution would be to remove the leaking portion and replace it.
I would suggest to remove the shed. Put in a horse shoe pit or a swimming pool. If you have to have a shed, you have to much stuff.
For gods sake. Why are you asking this bunch. Call a bloody roofer. It costs money, but if you try to bodge it yourself, you'll only prolong the inevitable.
You need a product called " Torch On". It's a bitumen backed felt, that is applied by heating with a blow torch. It sounds like a lot of work, but It isn't, and once it is done, forget it, forever!
Roofing felt is cheap just recover the whole roof. Or you could use ronseals roof leak reapair paint.
Don't gunk up your roof with a tar or chalking..felt is used to protect the sheeting from the weather and a vapor barrier..you need to figure out which shingles are leaking, and replace them..every once in awhile you need to get up on your roof and check for pop up nails this will save you a fortune in the long run..just nail the pop ups back down..and be careful when you get up there that you don't scorch the good shingles with your shoes this will damage your roof also...and how old is your roof most roofers will give a warranty..see if its still under warranty...hope this helps

when you say felt...Do you mean roll roofing..shingles in a big roll
felt is the black paper they put down under the shingles...

hubby's a owner of a roofing company
20 years experience
take it all off and put new felt on top.did mine yesterday.
