What's the dusty stuff contained by my kitchen cabinet's metal bread bin?
Anyway, the metal interior has this strange dusty residue on it. It loving of looks as if it was once painted, and that the paint have been stripped bad leaving a residue that disintegrates into dust when I wipe it.
Does anyone know what this might be? I'm guessing it may hold been an insulation product, but I don't know what it would hold been made of.
Ideally I'd approaching to thoroughly brush out the cupboard but I don't know whether it's safe to disturb. I'm not planning on storing food surrounded by the cupboard, but i am paranoid about what i may inhale when cleaning it.
Answers: I have an old hoosier cabinet and what it sounds resembling to be is that they put a felt type filling that has disintegrated. It is like type that we have see in out-of-date silverware cabinets that be once green. Anyway that would be my guess. I have see old foam become a powder form too. I would find a spray bottle and spritz it down with 10 parts hose down 1 part bleach or you could also use vinegar as a cleaner. Wear a masquerade to avoid any excess dust. I have a charcoal filter mask I use when I do anything next to dust and fumes, but you can just use one of those that you can pick up at the hardware or pharmacy for what little you will be exposed to.
when I be a little girl my grandma have this thing contained by her kitchen she called a 'pie safe'
it have a metal place on the top, to keep the pies not detrimental from rodents!
but... to answer your question... in attendance are so many things that it could be, I would be paranoid too.
i focus i would wash it out beside warm soapy dampen instead of brushing, you really don't want to brush some unknown material out into the upper air... and tie a hanky over my face cowboy style to hang on to from inhaling.

step get a painter mask at the hardware store at hand cheap.and i would wash it out next to vinegar and water so any dated must smell would disappear.i do not think it is insulation i guess just what you said alto of folks used to paint these things you must have at lowest possible couple of coats on there it is the paint coming sour just dust it down and you will have a better judgment sounds to me like an weak bakers cub oared as i deal surrounded by antiques that's what it sounds like to me you get a prize possession in your hand take well brought-up care of it.similar to i said wash it down next to the vinegar and water at tiniest once a month to control the dust antiques get pretty dusty sometimes.
