i have acquired an older tiller from montgomery wards 5hp i need an owners manual and or drive belt assembly?
Answers:
The engine is Briggs and Stratton.
On the top of the blower housing stamped into the steel right next to the spark plug is going to be a set of numbers.
For Example:
1)Model 641573
2)Code 0124-E1
3)Ser. 8134672
The Ser. is the serial number tells you the date of manufacture
In the example I've given above the
"81" is the year.
"3" is March
"4" is the date
and the last numbers are irrelevent.
You can narrow down the date of manufacture of your tiller in this manner.
Montgomery Ward sold them, but did not make them.
Gillson was the actual manufacturer
Now. On the end of the tensioner arm where the belts wrap around is a pair pulleys. One is flat, and one is groved.
The inner flat pulley engages the tines by PUSHING on the back side of the inner belt.
The outer 'V' pulley PULLS on the inside of the outer belt to engage the tines in reverse. That belt has to be twisted on the engine pulley, and looped around the outside of the tenssioner.
With the belts properly installed, there should be slack in both belts with the handle in neutral.
Good luck.

Check on eBay. Someone somewhere probably has one listed.

sure monkey ward sold it but they did not make the engine . look over the engine i'm sure youll find a tag of who made it . 2nd stand so that you are looking down all the grooves of the pully's the ones that line up tie a string around them if you have one that is smooth it is an idler or tension pully see if it moves up or down to keep tension now cut all the stings and take them to n.a.p.a . they have gates fractional hp belts give them the string to mesure the leinth save recipt put belt in pully be sure that it fits nicely into pully if it does your done if not go back and change belt thickness
best thing i could find was someone that is selling, perhaps, the same type of tiller you have. you can ask him a question. as far as a manual goes, i couldn't find it. here's the link to the the page that has the contact information for the seller.
