Pull start on walk-behind mower won't pull?

I just set-up a new walk-behind mower and before I could put the pull cord in the guide loop, the cord locked and won't move. I reconnected the brake release lever, but it still wont move.

Answers:
Cord may have slipped off the pulley and wedged between it and the housing. (Is it a "no-noise" catch, or is there a "clunk sound of metal?) Sometimes the pawls on the pulley housing get caught up and won't release too.

Either way, remove the shroud from the top and remove the little screws holding the pulley assembly together. It should lift right off. Don't worry about not getting it back together because all you have to do is put it back into place.

Not knowing what model it is, this is just a guess, but it doesn't sound too serious. Make sure you put oil in it before you start it for the first time also!

take it some where to get fixed
Sounds like excess cord has became wrapped around the spindle.

You will most likely need to remove the starter and untangle the starter cord.
If its new like u say, look in the directions for a 1-800 number.
They could help. I know, because I just got a lawn mower recently. Call them before returning.
