There is a bunch of reasons for this including their use of moth balls and skin/pain ointments.

Assume their home is old, old building smells. Also as people get older , they tend to decrease in their sense of smell and nelect to keep up with the housekeeping because of their limitation of their physical abilities.
Some time our Senior Citizens don't care for their homes like they did when they had the energy to clean. Have to consider the medications that may be out in the open, the trash can not cleaned like before.
I have cared for Senior Citizens for over 20 years. They have lost a lot of there energy to just keep the house clean. To them they don't smell the odor due to aging process effects their senses. If its a family member home maybe you should ask if you can help them clean up a little. I know that would make them feel a lot better about their place.
If you don't like the way their homes smell just stay away from them, you'd be doing them a favor. Perhaps they don't like everything about you either.

This is mostly due to a decline in general hygene, cleanliness and a lack of regular airing of the rooms. Certain cooking habits and keeping of pets can also have contributory effects.
Everyone's house smells different (I guess you could call it funny). It's because people's brains give off different odors. That's why everyone's house smells different, but the people who live their don't notice it cause it's their smell.
Maybe the old people you are visiting need a bath?
