Where can I find a apartment in the New Orleans area that is safe?
Answers:
Its best if you just look in the Gambit Weekly and find a house for rent. Thats what I had to do a couple of times. Look around the Midcity/Esplanade area or Uptown area.

If you are not familiar with New Orleans, you need to be careful. The best guideline is to examine the neighborhood around the place you are considering. If it looks decently kept up and there is recovery activity, then you are probably OK. Most anywhere uptown is safe: between St. Charles and the river up to Napoleon and then anywhere above Napoleon is good. Most of Mid City is also safe. French Quarter, Marigny and Bywater (below St. Claude) are also good.
If you can swallow living in the suburbs, most of Metairie is safe and the River Ridge area has lots of apartments.
Be aware that rents have gone up dramatically since Katrina. An apartment complex will not budge on rates but individuals renting out units may be open to negotiation on rate and term.
Welcome to New Orleans and good luck!
