Answers:
As long as you are not leaving your place unlocked overnight, why worry about the neighbors? If they are robbed, and it is found that they failed to lock their doors, their insurance companies will deny the claims because there was no forcible entry. In other words, they are negligent in not locking up.

I guess people are trusting or they just forget.
In a very general sense it can be defined as TRUST,,,usually learned through experience and the environment one lives in, or is surrounded by.
If I lived in a city and my car was accessible, for example, I might lock it, and no matter, I wouldn't leave invitations IN IT, for the process of tempting anyone.
But by the same token, I wouldn't consider LOCKING my refrigerator.
Schools are a good place to learn security issues, usually developing into the adult "paranoia", so many keep for a life time.
Sadly others want what they don't or can't have, unless they can acquire it from someone else, by way of theft. In that same sense however, there are people who don't care about what YOU have, or don't need it, or don't feel morally obligated to liberate it from you.
LOCKING, is no more a sin, than leaving something unlocked. Forgetting to lock anything you have already determined needs to be LOCKED is either carelessness, forgetfulness, or YOU REALLY HOPE SOMEBODY TAKES IT! IE: I've owned a few cars in my life, and have thought about leaving them unlocked, with keys in the ignition, and maybe a $20 bill on the drivers seat,,,HOPING I'd find the car gone in the morning, and maybe a thank you note,,,LOL,,, left in its place.
