How can Mice live in a stove and not get cooked?

We have had a mouse since last fall and it comes in and out of the stove, through the exhaust under the burners, it sneaks out to claim whatever snacks it can find and leaves evidence under the stove top, under the burners. Finally got it in a trap and then trapping two more. During the winter found two that had drowned in the dish water in the sink, so that makes 5 total. Just wondering how many more there could be, no more have gotten trapped unless their just avoiding the traps now. I'd think when the burners and oven are on and hot they'd cook.

Answers:
they sneak out when you turn the oven on. try putting a saucer of anti-freeze under the broiler so no other animals can get to it. It is sweet by nature so the mice will drink it and die. It doesn't take much at all to kill one mouse. Make sure it is ethylene glycol based not the environmentally free kind.

Other answers:
They have probably left the house now that it's spring. I swear every fall I have the same family of mice. I don't care how many you trap, there are always more. I don't care how tight your house is, they will still get in.
I have just learned to live in harmony with them. They don't ask for much and they stay out of the way. They drive my dogs crazy, but that's O.K. too. AS long as they are not rats, it's fine.

When they feel the heat they get out of the kitchen.
the ans. to your question is, very carefully. If you leave larger glue traps,(the sticky ones) put a piece a cheese, (small) on it they will come and get trapped on it. we put traps around the micorwave, coffee pot, one by both back burners, by the toaster. we caught 2 mice on one trap one morning. they love to move around at night. we kept the light above the stove on as well. within a week we caught 5. i say good to you.
they must have slipped out through a hole in the stove when it start to heat up. it happen to us. use some glue traps its more humane.
As you said they travel back and forth - so I'm presuming when they feel the heat - they run out before its too late!!
I disagree with leaving them alone - they cause disease and the best thing to do is trap them and either kill them or release them in a field depending on your views on the subject.
i like the anti freeze idea i used the same trick in my hunting cabin to keep mice away during the off season. works great
