i have an inverter at home for power backup. It is having an Exide battery which is just 18 mnths old. Now it is giving less time backup. On checking it was found that the specific gravity of one cell out of 6 is very low. One mechanic advised me to change cell while other says the whole battery will have to be replaced. What should i do?

Get yourself a sealed-for-life battery and don't go messing with the electrolyte - it's more danger and more hassle than it's worth, and you could blow something up. Lead acid battery life is poor, though 3-5 years is more normal than 18 months. Are you using it a lot? Lead acid likes steady, moderate warmth of about 20C - in an office is OK. But if it's not a sealed battery, I certainly wouldn't have it in a building.
