How can you tell if a lady bug is female or male? Why are they called lady bugs if they are both sexes?

Answers:
Lady bugs are darker red than their male counterparts. Light red, almost an orange color are the male bugs.

Other answers:
I don't know who named them lady bugs or why....but males have spots and females don't. There must be both male and female...or they would cease to exist.

I think it has to do with the markings, although I've never been able to tell them apart either. There are gardening supply centers and catalogs which sell them for pest control. They probably specify the gender.

As for why they are all called ladybugs - why do people refer to all humans as "man?" Sexism in entomology as well as the rest of the world! (ha, ha)
