Why do potatoes i buy rot within 5-6 days?

Recently - potatoes I buy at home rot within 5-6 days. There's a gooey mess and a stink. Never seen it before. What could it be?

Answers:
Plastic bags are a problem, as mentioned. Potato's, and some other veg's and fruit sweat, and the moisture is trapped in the bag. This causes rotting and mould growth, so they need ventilation. Mould growth can happen to bread, also, if the bread is moist and left sealed in plastic for a few days. Refrigeration helps, as this reduces sweating.

thou to be honest its that time of year when potatoes keep crap and taste worse
Take them out of the plastic bag and put them in a brown paper bag and put them somewhere cool, dark and dry
If you buy them in a 5lb bag or other size, you must open the bag and inspect each potato. That one nasty potato will ruin several of the others. Put the potatos in your vegetable drawer with paper towels or cloth towel beneath them. DON'T store them under your kitchen counter or any other damp place.
Don't leave them in a plastic bag as this makes the potatoes damp.
If U wish to store ur potatoes for a period, always make sure u get dry ones and store iin a cool dry place, and airy too. But the best bet is to consume them fast enough (within a week)
To store potatoes, make sure they are clean - free of dirt, and dry and keep in a dark, cool and dry location where air can circulate around them. I keep mine in a pantry closet located in a hall that is between the kitchen and carport. Sometimes I keep them in the cabinet under my sink too.
If you buy them in plastic bags, remove them and make sure there are no bad ones in the lot.

One bad apple spoils the whole bunch! Same is true for potatoes.

Keep them in the refrigerator in the vegetable compartment. They will keep for a very long time.

If you do not have room in the refrigerator, you can keep them in the cellar or basement where it is cool. This will also make them keep for months.
Do you make sure the potatoes are good potatoes before you purchase them. Check the firmness of potato before buy it. Then when get them home take out that plastic they come in. Put them in your vegatable bin. Make sure it got plenty of hole in it so the potato can breathe. Also make sure you keep them in cool place in your home.
