a former friend left a piano at my house 1 year ago & hasn't returned for it. Is it legal to dispose of it now

Answers:
You cannot charge them storage fee unless there has been an agreement prior to him leaving it there. Here is what you have to do:

Send him/her a registered/returned receipt, letter stating the facts. You must send this letter to his/her last known address. I would also send another copy to his parents and/or siblings. In other words, make EVERY EFFORT to contact the owner. Enclose a picture of the piano it all the letters and keep a copy of the picture, letter, returned receipts (showing someone received the letter) for your files. If your letters come back as not collected, your butt is still covered in your efforts to attempt to make contact. Regardless, wait the 30 days.

In your letter; The piano, (describe it, including make and serial number) was left here on (date). Explain you have been patient and have made several requests for its removal. He/she has 30 days from the date of receipt of this letter to remove the piano or you will have it removed at his/her expense. After the 30 days of receipt, you then can move it.

Anything short of what is described above could get you in trouble. They could come back to you three years from now and want to know where their $10,000.00 grand piano you borrowed is.

Be sure to CYA!

If you can get in touch with the friend, tell them that you need them to get the piano out of your house by a certain date or your gonna get rid of it yourself.
First thing you should do is contact your friend. If you are unable to reach him, i suggest that you sell it and keep the money.
I agree with killermanwolf. A friend of mine had a car that some friend of his left in the back lot of his home, after a year, he inquired with the city as well as the dmv, so as to get the title, and he could get a title, with a few fees of course.
Have you tried to contact this former friend? I would. Write a letter and send it to where they live, and let a mutual friend know that you're doing this. Then locate your local police station and ask their advice. You may want to ask the cops if they can help stick around as a witness to oversee when the friend comes by to pick up the piano on a mutally agreed to day.
